Local Students Support Anti-Litter Bill
Reported by: Sydney Hart
An anti-litter and recycling bill has been proposed in the state legislature that would add a nickel deposit on returnable drink containers. It's worked in Oregon for over 35 years and now some state lawmakers want to add Arkansas to the list of states already decorating some of your favorite drinks. House bill 2771 is commonly known as the anti-littering or recycling bill. It's sponsored by Representative Johnnie Roebuck and a local environmental science class is rooting this bill on. "Eleven states including Oregon, Hawaii, and Delaware have container deposit laws. In those states there's been a 30% decrease in littering and 250% increase in recycling," explains Hannah Remmel, a senior at Episcopal Collegiate school. "It's everyone in Arkansas that needs to get behind this and we need to clean up our state," adds Representative Johnnie Roebuck. For every bottle recycled you'd be refunded five cents.
