Students urge lawmakers to expand state bottle bill
(Hartford - WTNH) _ Plans to expand the state's bottle bill are getting more support, today students showed up at the state Capitol to literally show lawmakers why the bill needs to pass.
High school and middle school students, part of a group from Farmington called "Team Green", urged legislators to expand Connecticut's bottle bill, to include water, juice, and sports drink bottles.
The students brought with them a heap of the plastic trash to illustrate the mess the bottles are making because they are not part of the five cent deposit program.
Sen. Bill Finch, (D) of Bridgeport said he is already on their side.
"The nickel cleans our parks, it cleans our rivers and our streams, and these kids here today are living proof of how important this is going to be to our future," said Finch.
Finch said it was young people that helped push the state's original bottle bill through, 30 years ago.
