Bike ride to support Bottle Bill begins Saturday
State Sen. Doug Jackson and Rep. Mike Turner will join Scenic Tennessee’s Marge Davis on Saturday outside Legislative Plaza, Nashville, from 9 to 10 a.m. (CDT) for a rally in support of legislation to create a comprehensive recycling plan for beverage containers. Following the rally, Davis will begin a statewide bicycle ride in support of the legislation.
Known as the “Bottle Bill,” SB1408/HB1829 creates a five-cent deposit on glass, plastic, and aluminum beverage containers. Consumers would then return their empties to any of hundreds of small “redemption centers” located around the state.
“Other states have long used container deposits as an incentive to recycle,” Davis said. “Not only do these states tend to have the highest recycling rates in the country, they also have some of the cleanest roads.”
Beginning Saturday and running through Oct. 31, Davis intends to ride 800 miles around Tennessee to raise awareness about the bill. For more information, visit www.tnbottlebill.org or contact Davis at 615.758.8647 or margedavis@comcast.net.
