More bottle bucks on agenda
By JENNA MCMURRAY

Albertans could have a little more jingle in their pockets after trips to the bottle depot as a committee prepares to probe the province's recycling system.

Today is the deadline for Calgarians to register for a Sept. 20 public meeting which will determine changes to the Alberta's beverage container recycling regulations -- including the possibility of getting more cash back.

"Recycling is an issue that affects all Albertans," said Denis Ducharme, MLA for Bonnyville-Cold Lake and chairman of the committee.

"People have a lot to say about the issues and we want to hear about it."

Kim Leung is the owner and manager of the Sunridge Bottle Depot and said the recycling system in Alberta is in desperate need of reform.

"The system is outdated," he said. "People can't be bothered to wait in a line just to get $10 back."

Proposed changes also include bringing milk containers into the deposit-refund system, something Leung touted as a good idea.

"People are just throwing milk containers away," he said.

Other issue include the efficiency of existing depots and whether oversized containers should warrant a higher refund.
