LCBO bottle recycling starts

It's a good time to scour the garage and basement for old wine and liquor bottles.

The Liquor Control Board of Ontario kicked off its' new bottle recycling campaign Monday. Consumers will now be charged an extra few cents when they purchase wine or liqour but the money will be returned when they bring the bottles back to the Beer Store.

Ontario's environment commissioner says people who look through neighbourhood blue boxes for empties will be helping the new bottle return program.

Drinkers now have to pay up to 20 cents more for their favourite wine or spirit at the LCBO which they can get back if they return the empty bottle to the Beer Store.

Commissioner Gord Miller says the program will succeed even if drinkers don't cooperate because their empties will be returned by scavengers and through old-fashioned bottle drives. Environment Minister Laurel Broten says she expects the program will keep some 80 million bottles from ending up in landfills. But Ontario's restaurants say they stand to lose $35 million under the scheme.Stephanie Jones, with the Canadian Foodservices and Restaurant Association, says most restaurants are already locked into recycling contracts. She says they don't have the means to haul their bottles to the Beer Store for refunds.
