DOH cites Rolloffs Hawaii for recycling violations
The Hawaii Department of Health's Solid & Hazardous Waste Branch has cited Rolloffs Hawaii Inc. for violating the state deposit beverage container requirements and has fined the company $32,140.
Rolloffs, dba RRR Recycling Services Hawaii, violated numerous deposit beverage container requirements at multiple certified redemption centers in Honolulu from Feb. 9, 2006, through May 23, 2007, the department said.
Rolloffs failed to remove deposit beverage containers from customers' bags, boxes or bins for inspection before weighing and redeeming the containers, failed to inspect containers for the required HI-5 label, accepted customers' reported container counts without verifying accuracy, failed to post the refund values for each type of container material, and failed to post certification signs and hours of operation that could be viewed by the public.
The DOH said it performed multiple inspections at several Rolloffs facilities, performed follow-up inspections and sent warning letters before assessing the penalty.
Rolloffs has requested an administrative hearing to contest the complaint and order, the department said.
