Expanding bottle bill to include water, juice bottles makes sense
We’ve always been strong proponents of the bottle bill.
We consider recycling cans and bottles a minor inconvenience compared to the benefits of a cleaner environment and reduced trash.
So we’re glad that Gov. Chet Culver wants to change the law, including fruit juice and water bottles.
There can be no question of the booming popularity of fruit juices and bottled water. If these bottles aren’t recycled, they’re going to fill up our landfills. That’s not good.
We’d even include the energy drinks that are the latest craze, and any crazes that come along that you can buy in a can or bottle.
We trust lawmakers will give grocers considerable input when discussing any changes to the bottle bill.
But most important is our delicate environment. Revising the bottle bill would seem to be a step to protecting it even more. It’s a step we hope legislators seriously consider in the session which starts Jan. 14.
