Bottle and can returns
Syracuse, New York (WSYR-TV) – This Your Stories Q&A is about the state's bottle bill, which could be changing in the very near future.
Governor Paterson's budget presentation Tuesday included an expanded bottle bill proposal which would add iced tea, bottled water, and sports drinks to the list requiring five-cent deposits.
As it stands now, you only pay a deposit on soda, sparkling water, beer, or wine coolers, and that's in cans and bottles up to one gallon in size.
Paterson's proposal also asks that the unclaimed deposits be returned to the state -- those nickels can really add up.
A viewer recently wrote to us, asking if a store sells drinks that require a deposit, do those stores have to accept the returns?
The answer is yes -- but the store only has to accept returns of beverage containers it sells. For example, if a store only sells 12 ounce cans of soda, it is not required to accept return deposits of 20 ounce soda bottles. If you know a store that is violating the law, you can call the DEC to report them.
