Recycling depots await details on can deposit

CHARLOTTETOWN (CP) — The Island’s new beverage container deposit system may not be quite as ready as it should be.

That’s because the 10 return depots currently licensed to receive pop can or juice box returns for refund still haven’t settled on a deal with the province.

The new deposit and refund rules come into play when the can ban is lifted May 3.

But Bill Kinney of Charlottetown Bottle and Metal, a spokesman for the 10 licensed depot owners, said they haven’t agreed to the government’s offer of 3.6 cents per container as a handling fee for accepting, sorting and counting all the containers Islanders will return for refund.
