Soft drink higher refunds end Aug. 30

The deadline for higher refunds for glass pop bottle is quickly approaching.

Saturday, Aug. 30, is the last day for Prince Edward Island consumers to return their empty "refillable" glass soft drink containers to Island beverage container depots for the higher refund.

The traditional refund was due to end on Aug. 1, however the Coca Cola Bottling Company and the Pepsi Bottling Group agreed to continue to pay the traditional refund on their refillable glass pop bottles for the month of August.  Consumers have been paying the new reduced deposit of 10 cents per beverage container since Aug. 1.

After Sept. 1, refillable soft drink beverage containers or pop bottles will continue to be accepted at the beverage container depots for a refund of 10 cents per container.

Islanders and visitors are currently recycling approximately one million beverage containers per week, through returns to our 11 licensed beverage container depots and through using the blue bag collection system of the Island Waste Management Corporation.

With demand for soft drink beverages in refillable containers experiencing a dramatic decrease, excess refillable containers are being recycled by the distributors.

The Prince Edward Island Beverage Container Management System is Canada's leading recovery, reuse and recycling program. For more information about the Beverage Container Management System, visit  www.beveragecontainers.pe.ca.
