Plastics Recycling Update

Fraud possible in California recycling numbers

The California Department of Conservation issued its biannual beverage container recycling and redemption report, finding the beverage container recycling rate for all materials was 85 percent for the first six months of 2009. That figure is up nine percentage points from a 76-percent recycling rate from the same period in 2008.

Recycling rates for specific materials included a 78 percent recycling rate for PET, two percent for LDPE, while PP had a one percent recycling rate and PS had a two-percent recycling rate.

The 116-percent recycling rate for HDPE beverage containers — up from 90 percent for the same period in 2008 — is being investigated by the department, due to issues of potential fraud and to make sure that claims are being filed and processed correctly. If data is changed, it will be reflected in the next twice-annual report, to be published in May 2010.
