Statement From Governor David A. Paterson
“I am pleased that the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York has ruled to lift the injunction involving nickel deposits on bottled water. All bottled water sold in New York State must include a minimum nickel deposit effective October 31, 2009. In addition, 80 percent of the unclaimed deposits – money forfeited by consumers who opt not to return the empty containers for recycling – will be provided to the State.
“I am proud to have championed the Bigger Better Bottle Bill, one of the most effective environmental laws in our State’s history. The expansion of this legislation not only provides our State with much-needed revenue, but will also help us to keep our neighborhoods and parks clean.”
