Nickel deposits on drinks considered in Rutherford County
Rutherford County leaders are contemplating a statewide request to bring back nickel deposits for beverage containers.
A recycling advocacy group called Pride of Place wants the Rutherford County Commission to pass a resolution urging the Tennessee General Assembly to pass a new "bottle bill" to require 5-cent deposits on glass, plastic or aluminum beverage containers.
The commission's Steering, Legislative & Governmental and Public Works committees reviewed written requests last week but held off voting until the commissioners can study the proposal.
"In the end, I think the County Commission will forward something on to the legislature probably in support of that particular bill," said Commissioner John Rodgers, the steering committee's chairman.
"Obviously, it encourages recycling, which is the biggest thing. We can reduce the dependence on resources to produce those containers and at the same time reduce the amount of waste that goes into the landfill."
