After pipe leak, next environmental crisis: piles of discards
IN FOLLOWING the story of the major water main break that has affected the Boston area, and the resulting demand for bottled water, I can’t help but think of the second environmental catastrophe that is certain to follow: the millions of plastic water bottles that will be discarded during this crisis.
Though I hope people will recycle these bottles, a glance around my community makes me suspect that many will not do so.
It is time for Massachusetts to expand the beverage container deposit law to include water bottles, in order to give consumers an incentive to keep these containers out of our landfills.
