Wincor Nixdorf Powers Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative’s Bottle Drop Redemption Centers

Compact, secure iCASH 50 cash recycling system will automate cash refunds at redemption centers

AUSTIN, TX – October xx, 2010 – Wincor Nixdorf Inc., one of the world’s leading providers of IT solutions and services to retailers and retail banks, today announced that its iCASH 50 cash recycling solution has been deployed in the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative’s (OBRC) bottle and can redemption centers.

OBRC, a coalition of local and national distributors, operates BottleDrop redemption centers to simplify and automate the process of recycling bottles and cans. Wincor Nixdorf’s iCASH 50 will be used to further streamline this process, making it easier for customers to receive cash immediately for their bottle and can recyclables.

“When recycling is simple and convenient, we see improved consumer participation and increased environmental benefits. Wincor Nixdorf’s iCASH 50 is a significant part of this process, as it allows customers to easily and quickly obtain cash on the spot for their recycling contribution,” said Alisa Shifflett, OBRC Redemption Center Project Manager. “Furthermore, the iCASH 50 enables us to streamline the cash disbursement process, while providing increased security and reducing operating costs.”

Wincor Nixdorf’s iCASH 50 is a freestanding banknote-distributing terminal that manages all cash handling and reduces costs by completely automating cash processes. The closed cash cycle eliminates the possibility of errors or manipulation when handling cash, saving time, lowering costs, maximizing resources and provides a safe and secure work environment for employees as there is no requirement for them to handle cash.

“Handling cash is extremely labor and cost-intensive. Our iCASH line of products revolutionizes this process by applying end-to-end cost efficient methods of cash handling to retail that were previously reserved for the banking industry,” said Doug Wallace, Vice President, Retail Division, Wincor Nixdorf. “This innovative solution will help OBRC cut costs and increase efficiencies at the redemption centers – allowing the organization to focus on improving the environment and delivering great customer service.”

BottleDrop redemption centers offer three ways for consumers to redeem their bottles and cans.  A Self Service option utilizing state of the art reverse vending machines, traditional hand count services for consumers with limited quantities or simply dropping off an EZ Drop recyclable bag filled with Oregon redeemable containers for associates to process containers and make a deposit into customers BottleDrop account.  Customer have a choice of instant cash or a cash withdrawal from their BottleDrop account.  The first iCASH 50 deployment was installed at the recently opened Wood Village facility, with an additional opening in Oregon City in the winter of 2010.  In all, OBRC has plans to open up to ninety BottleDrop Redemption Centers across the State.

About The Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative

OBRC is a member-owned, cooperative corporation. OBRC was formed in January of 2009 out of a merger between Container Recovery, Inc. and Beverage Recyclers of Oregon.  Combined, we have over 30 years of experience in bottle bill operations. We pick up from nearly 3,000 grocery stores then count, sort, crush, bale and recycle millions of containers a day. The entire process is handled by beverage distributors and the retail industry – at no cost to the taxpayer.
OBRC is now picking up and processing over 90% of all containers redeemed throughout Oregon. These containers are taken to one of five facilities around the state. The processing facilities are located in Portland, Eugene, Medford, Bend, and Pendleton.

As a result of What We Do, and How We Do It, more than 120 million pounds of containers stay out of our landfills each year, and we all enjoy a cleaner, greener Oregon.   For more information, visit our websites:  www.obrc.com or www.bottledropcenters.com
