Oregon City bottle redemption center plans open house
Center will be the second in the state, and open in January after an open house on Dec. 30

Residents will get a chance next week to drop in to the Oregon City bottle redemption center next week, just the second such facility in the state.

There will be an open house at the BottleDrop Redemption Center, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30.

The center, located at 14214 Fir Street, Suite A, in Oregon City, is scheduled to open Jan. 3. During the open house, citizens can also sign up for a BottleDrop account and become eligible for $50 in BottleDrop account credit.

Bottle redemption centers are being championed by grocery stores that want the sometimes-messy bottle return area moved out of their stores. The Oregon City redemption center will replace bottle returns at four Oregon City grocery stores – Fred Meyer, Albertsons, Haggen and Safeway – and will be operated by the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative.

“We’re excited about bringing a new way of redeeming to Oregon City residents,” John Andersen, OBRC president said in a release. “There’s been an overwhelming response from customers using our first site in Wood Village. We believe this site will further strengthen Oregon’s Bottle Bill and help Oregon maintain its standing as a national leader in recycling.”

The new center will employ a drop-off system that allows customers to drop off their redeemable bottles and cans in a labeled bag. The items will be counted and customers will then receive the credit amount on a plastic card, similar to a gift card, which can be used at a kiosk or participating grocery store. There will also be a new version of the common reverse vending machines seen in grocery stores.

The first center opened in Wood Village in October.
