Bottle redemption center proposed for Oregon City
State’s second such facility would eliminate collection at four local grocery stores

A cooperative of grocers is proposing opening the state’s second “bottle bill redemption center” in Oregon City, replacing bottle and can returns at four grocery stores in the city.

The Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative, a group comprised of grocers and distributors, is proposing the site at 14214 Fir Street, just south of Beavercreek Road. If the center is approved, beverage containers will no longer be accepted at the Fred Meyer on Molalla Avenue, Haggen’s on Highway 213, Albertsons on Beavercreek Road, and Safeway on Molalla Avenue.

The redemption center would accept all of the containers accepted under the Oregon Bottle Bill.

Grocers have long complained about the messy process of collecting bottles and cans returned in exchange for a nickel deposit mandated under the state’s 1971 bottle bill. The first redemption center was approved last month in Wood Village.

The proposed hours for the center are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the summer and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the rest of the year.

The proposal includes a 24-hour drop box for account holders, and would accept up to 200 containers per person per day cash refund and greater numbers for account holders who credit payment on a voucher. Special arrangements could be made to accept large quantities from fundraiser and donation accounts.

A public comment period is open through 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 2. To submit comments, e-mail Lynne.Johnson@state.or.us or mail comments to OLCC, Lynne Johnson, P.O. Box 22297, Milwaukie 97269-2297. Please identify the store(s) used to redeem your containers in your comment.
