Oregon City bottle redemption center approved

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission has approved a bottle redemption center for Oregon City, which will likely become just the second of its kind in the state.

The redemption center, at 14214 Fir Street, is set to open in the fall.

Bottle redemption centers are a concept being championed by grocery stores that want the sometimes-messy bottle return centers moved out of their stores. The bottle redemption center will replace bottle returns at four Oregon City grocery stores – Fred Meyer, Albertsons, Haggen and Safeway – and will be operated by the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative.

“This will simplify the time-consuming and often dirty job of redeeming bottles,” OBRC president John Andersen said in a statement. “It will also strengthen our bottle bill and renew Oregon’s commitment to be a national leader in recycling.”

The new center will employ a drop-off system that allows customers to drop off their redeemable bottles and cans in a labeled bag. The items will be counted and customers will then receive the credit amount on a plastic card, similar to a gift card, which can be used at a kiosk or participating grocery store. There will also be a new version of the common reverse vending machines seen in grocery stores.

The first return center was approved for Wood Village, and is scheduled to open in August.
