Vt. group seeks to expand state's bottle bill

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont Public Interest Research Group is pushing its effort to get the state to expand the state's bottle deposit law to water, tea and non-carbonated beverages.

The group's environmental health advocate Charity Carbine says Vermonters not only like the 40-year-old law, they want to see it updated .

The Burlington Free Press is reporting there are bills in the House and Senate that would to carry out the expansion VPIRG advocates with its "Bigger, Better, Bottle Bill Campaign."

A bill introduced Thursday would require producers of packaging, including beverage containers, and printed material to take responsibility for the waste associated with their products.

Warren Coleman of the Beverage Association of Vermont says the association prefers the approach in the Thursday bill to expanding the bottle law.
