Nevada passes bottle bill study measure

July 7, 2011 Nevada will look into the possible implementation of a deposit redemption program for various types of beverage containers, following the passage of Assembly Bill 427. The bill, which had initially been for a nickel deposit on all types of containers that hold beer and other malt beverages, mineral water, soda water and similar carbonated soft drinks, now directs the legislature to "appoint a committee to conduct an interim study concerning the establishment of a [deposit redemption] program." Nevada OKs study of possible bottle bill

July 1, 2011 -- Nevada will study the establishment of a bottle bill for the state after legislators there approved a measure to look into deposits for various items. Assembly Bill 427, which was previously a deposit proposal that would force a 5-cent deposit on various recyclables, was changed to a study in early June. Both the Assembly and Senate passed the measure. Waste & Recycling News

Bottle deposit bill gets tagged with $1.4 million fiscal note, on way to study status

May 31, 2011 CARSON CITY, Nev. — The mission to add Nevada's name to the list of bottle deposit states is on its way to limbo. Lawmakers on the Assembly Ways and Means Committee heard support Tuesday for AB427. The bill would tack on a refundable 5-cent deposit onto plastic bottles. Nevadans would reclaim the cash by dropping off bottles at recycling centers. The bill's initial cost was pegged at around $500,000, but the updated proposal comes with an estimated $1.4 million per-year price tag because it would increase the state's responsibility. The bill will likely morph into a directive to study recycling programs during the interim. No action was taken on the bill.
