Don't ignore the benefits of a deposit on cans, bottles
The May 16 editorial, "Bottle bill/poor timing," and the May 20 letter, "Bottle bill redundant, ploy to raise revenue for state," regarding the proposed bottle-deposit bill are full of negative suppositions that boil down to "don't cause me any inconvenience."
The positive benefits of the bill are ignored by knee-jerk illogic. There are many states that have benefited environmentally and economically from such a bill. New Jersey might also.
In other states, the redemption centers are in grocery stores or nearby. No extra trips are necessary to those who can plan ahead. There is no cost to consumers who return their cans and bottles. Those who are currently too lazy or too inconsiderate to recycle will no doubt not want to be bothered with returns to get back the deposit. That is their loss.
Many a dollar is to be made by those who pick up the tossed-away articles from the roadside. Redemption centers offer employment. Let's stop being so short-sighted and look at the total picture. It is so easy to be negative, but that seldom solves a problem.
