Gippsland MP pushes for container recycling scheme

The independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, says the State Government has dragged its feet on introducing legislation to encourage people to recycle bottles and cans.

Family First Senator Steven Fielding is preparing a Private Member's Bill pushing for nationwide container recycling legislation similar to that in South Australia.

Mr Ingram says all political parties in the Victorian Parliament support the legislation, except for the Labor Government.

He says Victoria is falling well behind South Australia, which recycles 85 per cent of its drink containers.

"All the other states that haven't got CDL [container deposit legislation] schemes don't have the required level of recycling of beverage containers," he said.

"CDL is very popular, it works, and it's time that both the Victorian and Commonwealth governments came on board."
