Recycling deposit scheme considered
Tasmanians may soon be able to collect a small refund for returning their empty food or drink containers to a depot for recycling.
The State Government is seeking consultants to undertake a feasibility study into implementing a container deposit system in Tasmania.
The Environment Department's John Mollison says South Australia is the only state in Australia with the system.
"Some of the key issues for the study will be how it might work in Tasmania where the population is a little bit more dispersed and regionalised," he said.
"How it might impact on our existing curb-side recycling programs for example, what effect it might have on local government services and of course the cost of implementing a system like that and who might pay."
The study is expected to around five months.
