Bottle depots will take milk jugs
Beginning on the first of June, bottle depots across the province will start offering refunds for milk containers

As of June 1, milk containers can be taken to bottle depots for a refund.

The Beverage Container Management Board is charging refundable deposits on dairy containers in excess of 30 ml starting June 1 on beverage containers marked AB DEPOSIT.

The labelling will only appear on containers sold on or after June 1, and will appear below the neck in black or red ink.

All permitted bottle depots are required to collect eligible milk and cream containers and provide refunds.

According to Strathcona County Utilities, you can still leave rinsed-out, flattened milk jugs and cartons on the curb to be collected with the weekly recycling.

Included in the province’s new milk-and-cream recycling program are fluid milk, creams, whipping creams, buttermilk and drinkable yogurt.

Not included under the new regulations are infant formula, non-dairy based flavoured coffee creamers and non-drinkable semi-fluids such as yogurt sold in tubes and pop packs because they are not ready-to-serve beverages.

Deposits are 10 cents for containers 1L and smaller, 25 cents for containers more than 1L.

In addition to the deposit, there will be a non-refundable container recycling fee.

Labels must be on milk jugs that are taken back for a refund. Customers can squash milk jugs and cartons to save space.

The Government of Alberta is putting in the program to reach its goal of recovering 85 per cent of beverage containers.
