Fair Play for Children recommends a 50p returnable deposit on all alcoholic beverage containers. This would reduce young teenage drinking as well as tackling litter and landfill problems.
A deposit would give a strong disincentive to under-age drinkers at the point of sale and could be implemented quickly. It would have the added benefit of cleaning up playgrounds and other public spaces
Broken booze bottles or cans lying on playground and in bushes are a health hazard and cost taxpayers millions of pounds to remove.
We must stop blaming children for the litter. They are more environmentally conscious these days. The problem is throw-away containers.
